This is Grace

Poetry

During some time of reflection today, I found myself thinking “wow, I have been blessed to be given so many weaknesses!” Wait, what? That sounds a little backwards. But the thought process that led to that conclusion is this: In every weakness I’ve experienced, I find it very hard to pass judgement on someone else for the same offense. I have too much understanding as to how they could be in that situation or that struggle, how the weaknesses occur and trap us and how those situations don’t solely define who the person is inside. This frees me from feeling any right or obligation to judge them. And when judgement is removed, love and good intentions seem to fill its place.

“Do you judge another people? You your-selves have done wrong things. So when you judge others, you judge yourselves, because you do the same things. You judge them and yet you do the same things.” (Romans 2:1)

Thank You for my weaknesses

For they have taught me grace

So let us give grace

and when we can’t…

let us give love

and when we can’t…

let us leave them in the hands

of the One who can and does.

More Than a Savior

Poetry, Thoughts

When God showed up to rescue me, I was highly addicted to crystal meth, weighed under 100 lbs and lived in a little shack with my boyfriend where he cooked and sold meth.  We stole food from the grocery store to eat and literally had nothing except our habit and a life consumed with fulfilling that habit.

You’re more than a Savior to me

You are the One who came to rescue me

You showed up when no one else could

You came into the darkness like You said You would.

And now I am free

Free to get to know You

As the One who has captured my soul.

Jesus You’re more than a Savior to me.

His Love Never Fails

Poetry

Grateful no matter where I go

You’re with me

No matter what stage, what season

You are there

Running into Your arms

I see all You teach me

Through these storms

My stubbornness gets shattered

My treasures all tattered

My humility is deepened

My sins are forgiven

Because …

“Your Love never fails, it never gives up, it never runs out on me.”

(One Thing Remains)

Romans 8:38-39

38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord

You Say

Poetry

My shame tries to claim me

Tries to define and name me

But You have something

different to say

You say I’m a child of God

My past tries to haunt me

Tries to destroy and taunt me

But You have something

Different to say

That I am forgiven and loved

Not chained to my sin

But to Your presence within

I am free to let go and grow

Galatians 3:26

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,

Friendship

Poetry

A true mark of friendship is when you become a better person because of it.  A true friend can love you where you are but also encourage you to change for the better.

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times…

Proverbs 27:17

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Proverbs 27:6

Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.

Treasures

Poetry

I give you my treasures

All tattered and torn

They’ve lost all their luster

They’re long over worn

At first I couldn’t see it

I didn’t have a clue

How worthless they were

Until I saw You

Philippians 3:8

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ

Grace

Poetry

Some might wonder

How I could speak Your name

After all that I have done

It’s not because I’m worthy

But because of Your grace

That I am unconditionally loved

Hebrews 4:15

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.

In Freedom

Poetry

Do not promote guilt

When I died to set you free

Who decides which sin is worse

When this wasn’t even clarified by Me?

It is the condition of the heart

That only the Father can see

And He deals with it in grace

Not in condemnation to imprison thee

1 Samuel 16:7

“…The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

Matthew 15:14
“Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

These Three

Poetry

Pride quiet yourself

You will not be entertained

Suffer silently through

your offense and inflated pain

Regret you’ve been replaced

This is no longer your domain

You ruled uselessly for years

Now turn and go on your own way

And last but not least

I am abandoning you fear

For all the missed opportunities

You caused me while here

1 Corinthians 13:13

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

He Knows & Provides

Poetry

You know who’s hurting

You know each one’s needs

You know who’s heart is hardened

You know who needs some peace

Matthew 5:45-46

“…He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you only love those who love you, what reward will you get? …”

Loud Faith

Poetry

You hold my hand

And walk with me

You know everything on my mind

You understand

And see my heart

You’ve plans in your own time

If what I want

Is beneath Your desire

I submit my will to Yours

You know better

And my vision is limited

So my wanting I’ll endure
Let my faith be my patience

Let is rise above the rest

Let it be the loudest voice

My heart hears

As I’m tempted by trials and tests

Known and Loved

Poetry

You know exactlywhat I need in every way

You foresee my life

And You guide every day
You use my weaknesses

To accomplish Your will

You change my heart

And cause me to be still
I can’t see You with my eyes

I’ve faced many doubts

But every time I give up

You grab hold and turn me around
That’s how I know

and why I believe

That’s how I know

You see and love me
Isaiah 49:16
See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.
Luke 12:7
Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Baggage

Poetry

Leave your bag at the door

Leave your burdens

All you carried here

Think of them no more

Tomorrow when you come again

Leave it at the door

And when you leave

You may pick it up once more

My hope for you one day

As you’re treading back and forth

Is that you see it’s not required

To carry your bag from door to door

Love Without Fear

Poetry

Pain taught me to self protect

And it built its own defense

But now when I try to walk in faith

I’m trapped behind this fence

I push some people away

And hide away with You

Until I’m reminded hiding

Is not what You intend me to do

Exercise faith with courage

By loving without fear

Some of these people I’m turning away

Are blessings You planned for me here

Son of Man

Poetry

He came to me again

He showed me His hand

in the things I’ve been experiencing

He helped me understand

He loves, He frees,

He relentlessly loves.

He heals me

He is bound to no man.  He is subject to no law.

He destroys boundaries, He is above it all.

Revelation 1:14-18

The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.”

Give Thanks

Poetry

Grateful for trials

For hard times and growth

Grateful for treasures

For pleasures, for both

Grateful that falling

Finds wings to take flight

Grateful the valley

Gives way to great heights

1 Thessalonians 5:18

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

Guidance

Poetry

Sometimes you need to walk awaySometimes you need to stay

Sometimes you need to understand

Sometimes you need to turn away
Sometimes you need to open up

Sometimes you need to raise your shield

Sometimes you need to push on

Sometimes you need to stop and be healed.
There is a time and a place for every move

Lord give us the wisdom to know which to choose.
Make our steps light

Keep our hearts pure

As we navigate each day

May we with kindness endure

Dare to Dream

Poetry

Oh how great are they!

The things You desire for me

So no longer will I hinder you

With a doubtful heart and disbelief

I’ll believe in Your promises

With hope and trust in Your strength

Knowing You are preparing me

For wonders I myself would never think!

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Never Alone

Poetry

Your voice

Your touch

Your way

Your strength

Your lead

always

Unwavering

Unchanging

Is your love

Not filtered

Nor hindered

But enough

Thank you for including me

For counting me as your own

For not rejecting me

Or leaving me to do life alone

Deuteronomy 31:6

6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave younor forsake you.”

More

Poetry

I’ve been told about You

I’ve seen glimpses yet only a few

In certain seasons, You’ve held me close

Now as I see more, I realize how little I knew

You are more than I thought

More powerful

More beautiful

More gracious

More unique

More unpredictable

More kind

More loving towards me

The following is a condensed excerpt from “The Jesus I Thought I Knew” by Philip Yancey

“The more I studied Jesus, the more difficult it became to pigeon-hole him…..He urged obedience to the Mosaic law while acquiring the reputation as a lawbreaker.  He could be stabbed by sympathy for a stranger, yet turn on his best friend with the flinty rebuke ‘Get behind me, Satan!’  He had uncompromising views on rich men and loose women, yet both types enjoyed his company.  One day miracles seemed to flow out of Jesus; the next day his power was blocked by people’s lack of faith.”

On Forgiveness

Poetry

There’s something in my way

And I think I know what it is

As much as I love the idea

I really don’t want to forgive

Forgiving feels impossible

To my injured pride and heart

But maybe You will help me

It’s at least a good place to start

Lord take my injuries

My offenses and pain

Hold them with You on the cross

Where You already took our blame

And the pain I’ve caused others

Hold it there with You

You truly forgave me

Now help me to do that too

Show us how to love like You

Matthew 18:21-22
21Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”

22Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

This Path

Poetry

When I feel led by You

I have to follow through

Despite what others may say

It may sound foolish

The path I choose

But I’m following it anyway
I won’t do this perfectly
I’ll deny You

and I’ll fall
But this is the way

I want to go

This path is worth it all
John 10:27
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

Friend of Sinners

Poetry

I don’t look the way you think I should

I won’t fit inside your box

I can’t get enough of the people I love

You may disagree with the way I walk

Don’t expect me to condemn I won’t

These are the people I long to know

They need me and I died for them

To walk along side wherever they go
Luke 7:34

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’

Beautiful You

Poetry

I’ve been a beggar

A thief, a liar at war

An addict, pathetic

Unable to take any more

I’ve been arrogant

Proud, a heavenly soul

Following the rules

Perfecting my show
I’ve been in love and lust

Unable to focus or see

Distracted by beauty

High, soaring and free
I’ve known poverty, loss

Lived without a home

Caused pain and grief

Been lost and left alone
I’ve had all the answers

Thought the rules didn’t apply

I’ve blamed everyone else

And lived a disguise
I’ve been fragile, insecure

Done things wrong and had regret

I’ve gained confidence

Had successes, a love I won’t forget.
These colors, these chances

These dances full of grace

Designed for each one of us

To help us somehow see His face
Each life custom ordered

With specific trials and tests

Meant to teach us, help us learn

So we can then turn and teach the rest
Don’t hide who you are

Or the trials you’ve been through

It’s made you who you are

Imperfectly beautiful you 💗

Romans 5:3-5

3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

1 Corinthians 9:22

“To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.”

A New Home

Poetry

Then He took my hand

And led me far away

He tended to my wounds

He taught me how to pray

And when an opportunity came to go

I didn’t want to leave

I had fallen in love with this resting place

Where He showed me freedom and peace

So we agreed I could stay!

This was now my new home

Living with Him at my side

With no more need to roam

Psalm 147:3

He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.

Fighting for the Underdog

Poetry

Ugh, brokenness

It’s all around

Inside, outside

Upside down

She’s wrong, he’s right

Whoever you hear first

May pull you

To their side of the fight

But don’t rush in

Everyone has a side

Each their own perspective

Not 100% wrong or right

Look at every angle

Seek to understand

For tomorrow, it might be you

In their place, needing a hand

No, it’s not that simple

There’s real hurt, there’s pain

But let’s try not to add to it

Seek to forgive, not to blame

Proverbs 18:17
In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right, until someone comes forward and cross-examines.

Humility

Poetry

I am frozen by Your love

Unable to speak or move

When my heart sees

The complexity and truth of You

And when I ask You

How it is I’m able to see

You say it’s all my weaknesses

That opened the door for me

If I was strong and proud

If I had it all together

I would go about life on my own

And wouldn’t need my Savior

But I’m in a weak frame

And while my past He won’t condone

He still lovingly responds

He who is without sin, throw the first stone

1 Corinthians 1:27

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

John 8:7

When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”

Matthew 13:15-16

15 …and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.’ 16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear…

Discernment

Poetry

My name is discernment

Trust what I reveal and know

I show you the hidden things

You’d otherwise never be told
I show you opportunities for blessing
And how to count sorrow as joy

I whisper God’s wisdom

Amid this world’s noise
I sense when something new is brewing
When it is time to block an attack

I sense calmness and times to be still

When to move on and when to hold back
I’m a gift, don’t ignore me

Shut me out or throw me away

Embrace me and listen

I will bless and enrich your day
