This was the scripture of the day today, so I decided to look at it a little closer.
“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
On the surface, this is a very comforting message. Yet, there are people living with no shelter and little to no food. There are people who’ve faced unfathomable tragedies and loss. Have they been forsaken? If not, what do you mean by You won’t leave or forsake us?
You will not abandon us.
You will not renounce or give us up.
How do we see You present when we are faced with undesirable, catastrophic or traumatic circumstances? Is it a peace in our hearts despite the surroundings? Is it hope when everything looks dark?
The thought that a loving, all powerful, heavenly Father will be by my side no matter what circumstances I find myself in is certainly comforting. So to rest in this promise today, I’ll say:
Whether I’m in luxury or poverty
Your Word says You will not forsake me
Whether covered in blessings
Or buried in tribulation
You will never leave
It’s the promise of your Spirit
That brings comfort
And the knowledge of your Presence
That brings peace.
